10 Do's and Don'ts for a Healthy Skin
Ten things you should and shouldn't do for a healthy skin
Okay, let’s keep it real. Who doesn’t want a healthy and smooth complexion? I’ll be the first to admit that while I pride myself on being the most self-obsessed and over-compulsive skincare and makeup user, I’m not always efficient with following the cardinal rules for great skin. It is really one of the hardest things to find a skincare routine that works for you and to keep up with it. But since I have been with mine for a while now, I wanted to share my tried and true list of dos and don’ts to maintain a healthy and smooth complexion.
1. DO shop for skincare products that cater to your unique skincare concerns and tone. If you suffer from the occasional breakout, shop for products that contain Salicylic Acids or Benzoyl Peroxide. The products won’t work overnight, but consistency is the key to healthy skin.
2. DON’T pop or pick with your pimples! It’s tempting, and we (secretly) all do it, but seriously, you’ll regret the scarring that picking potentially leaves behind, and you’ll be haunted by guilt when your aesthetician asks if you attempted to do his/her job.
3. DO invest in facials. Seriously, they’re worth it. I go at least once every four weeks for professional extractions, and my skin looks and feels better within days.
4. DON’T sleep with your makeup on. Do we really need to talk about why not?
5. DO see a dermatologist regularly. If you have moles or odd skin discoloration that you’re concerned about, a well-trained health practitioner can determine whether there’s a need for further evaluation for skin cancer, or a prescription.
6. DON’T skimp on the sunscreen. One of the highest misconceptions with caring for African-American skin is that there isn’t a need to protect the skin from harmful UVA/UVB rays. Wrong! Brown skin burns, too, and the risk of skin cancer is just as likely as skin tones with less pigment.
7. DO drink plenty of water and feed your body super foods that are rich in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D and C. Love salmon and sushi? Cool. What about spinach, kale and blueberries? Great…even better!
8. DON’T touch your face with dirty hands. Y’all already know that germs are everywhere, and transferring the dirt from your hands or even your cell phone is just asking for a premature breakout. Don’t do it.
9. DO shop for oil-free makeup and products that don’t contain fragrances. Some people are uber sensitive – and can break out from just walking through the cosmetics department. Ask the experts behind the counter for recommendations, or look for drugstore brands like CoverGirl or Revlon that have great oil-free powders and liquid foundations and blush.
10. DON’T go longer than 48 hours without changing your washcloths or pillowcases. The potential for bacteria transfer or even the oil from your haircare products on both of these are extremely high and often overlooked. If you can switch ‘em up every 24 hours, I’d recommend that. Your skin will thank you later.
