Men's Talk: 6 Reasons You Look Horrible In Your Suit

Six reasons you don't look good in your suit
mens talk 6 reasons you look horrible in your suit

There’s nothing better than a well-fitted suit. And there’s nothing worse than a poorly fitted suit. If you still can't manage to look like James Bond, or should we say Jidenna, we’re here to help. Here are six ways you might be wearing your suit wrong.

1. The shoulders are too wide.
The shoulder pads on your suit should hug and end with your shoulders. Too big and you’ll look like a 1940s gangster in a zoot suit.

2. Your jacket chest is too small or too big.
The jacket should not pull or strain when you button it. At the same time, there shouldn’t be too much wiggle room. You should be able to easily slip your flat hand under the lapels and that’s it.

3. There’s a gap in your collar.
Your shirt should fit snugly against your neck, and the jacket collar should rest against your shirt collar with no big gaps. If there’s a gap around your collar you’ll look like a little kid wearing his dad’s suit jacket.

4. Your sleeves are too long.
The sleeves of your jacket should end just at the top of your wrist. Your dress shirt sleeve should be a touch longer, ending at the base of your hand. That way just the right amount of shirt cuff is exposed—a quarter to a half inch.

5. Your hem is too long.
The bottom of your pants should hit right around your shoelaces for a slight break. A full break, where your pants pool at the bottom, makes you look shorter.

6. You’re wearing dress pants like jeans.
Your suit pants are not jeans; don’t wear them low on your waist. They should sit at the hipbone area or slightly above it. The pants should fit perfectly without the need of a belt. And, for the love of Don Draper, please make sure the butt is neither too saggy nor too tight.
